Are you swimming in confusion within the vast sea of recordable DVD discs? Well, it’s sometimes difficult to obtain information on which portable DVD players play which type of recordable DVD discs, sometimes even for the manufacturers. The packaging and owners manuals sometimes conflict when showing disc compatibilities.
Not to worry, here at All About Portable DVD Players we extensively test and evaluate all of the players that we sell (and some that we don’t sell). Using discs recorded with various video content we are able to check whether these players are capable of reading and playing the recordable formats available today. If the specifications on our website state that a particular player is capable of accepting a recordable format, that means we have successfully played a disc of that type in that model.
There is one caveat here: there are some variances that can arise dependent upon several recording conditions and may affect playability of some discs. These factors may include whether the disc’s recording session was closed/finalized, recording drive brand, recording (burning) software used to record the disc, cheaper/low quality blank discs… the list goes on. However, in general, most recordable DVD formats (done on a computer) play in today’s DVD players.
We have tested DVD discs recorded from set-top box DVD recorders ( the component type recorder units that you would hook up to your TV) like the Panasonic DMR-E50 DVD Recorder. Interestingly, the discs produced by these units do not have a high success rate of compatibility with portable DVD players, even when recording on a Panasonic unit and then playing back on a Panasonic player.
